Edmonton Oil Kings are Back!

Well, on top of a huge, nail-biting 4-3 shoot out win last night over the Detroit Red Wings, yesterday was an important day to note for another reason. On their 40th anniversary of their 1966 Memorial Cup Championship, the Edmonton Oil Kings came back to Edmonton.

I attended the press conference yesterday at Rexall Place and had the chance to meet a few of the 40-some Oil Kings alumni who flew in from all over the country and the world to be there. They’re all a bit older now, one fellow actually reminding me of Burt Lancaster as Moonlight Graham in Field of Dreams. He even gave you a mischievous wink after telling you a story from one of their many road trips across the prairies. It was incredible talking to these guys.

So, now a new generation of Oil Kings will be coming to town with the start of the WHL season September 2007. They’ll play 36 regular season home games with 2 additional exhibition games for a total of 38 right in Rexall Place. What’s really exciting is that this team has all the support that other junior hockey teams, who’ve tried to make a start in this city, did not. The Oil Kings have a deep-rooted history here, and with well-established provincial rivals just south of us, the WHL already has a strong footing in Western Canada. This is going to be really great.

Up at the Château Lake Louise

It's bit of a funny thing getting married and then having to wait for the pictures. With the "big day (aka best day of our life)" flying by so quickly, it's almost as though you're waiting for proof that it actually happened. Fortunately, we've received an email or two from friends who took pictures, so Kirsten and I know for sure that it did in fact happen - there is actual photographic evidence. Fewww! So, as we wait another week or two for the professional photos from the wedding to be developed, we did take a few shots ourselves while we were up at the Château Lake Louise on our short, but sweet honeymoon.

Our groomsmen were good enough to take care of all the loose ends the day after the wedding. They took all the gifts from the UBI over to our place, returned the tuxes, moved bedroom suites into living-rooms and dining-room suites into bedrooms, re-arranged kitchen cupboards, changed our clocks, laced our shoes up backwards and moved our pictures and artwork around thoughtfully, etc... Aaahhhhhhhh... HAHA! This was great though, because while the boys had their fun, K and I were able to pretty much simply head straight out of town stress free. The drive up was great. The weather was good and we had a lot of fun filling each other in on all our own memories from the evening before. It amazed me that even in a small and intimate setting like ours, how many people you miss talking to and how many funny little things I missed. I think it's great though how even though we were all at the same place, everyone will take away their own unique and personal memories from the night. It will be fun hearing about them as time goes on.

Here in town, although there was a little bit of snow giving everything that fresh, clean winter look, by the time we got to the mountians, and the CLL, it was a postcard winter wonderland. Oddly though at the same time, it was still fairly warm out so we were able to walk around the resort and the lake without wearing our jackets. It really is a truly beautiful place.

We spent our time sleeping in, hiking around the lake taking photos, warming up in the lounge overlooking the lake with hot blueberry tea, swimming and soaking in the hot tub and sharing some great dinners. Funny story about our big celebration dinner actually. We had planned to do one really nice dinner while we were there. So, we made reservations at the 5 star Fairview lounge for 7:15pm Sunday night. We were planning on having some champaign to celebrate, so when the waiter suggested two glasses of Moet Chardon, we agreed whole-heartedly. Now, I have recently come to really enjoy Champaign. I think it's wonderfully fantastic! So when I tasted this stuff I was instantly excited. It was the best Champaign I'd ever had. I ordered a second glass part way through dinner because I was enjoying it so much. I commented to the waiter how much I liked it and he said something like, "Yes, it's brilliant isn't it. Too bad it's like smoking a fine cigar. You cant afford to have it all the time." Kirsten and joked after about how we hadn't thought to ask about the price and how it would probably be $15-$20 a glass! Neither of us actually thought it would be of course. And, it wasn't. It was worse. 3 glasses of Moet Chardon came to $84.00... That's $28.00 per glass. WOW!!!! That was some great Champaign though, and it seemed fitting that it was on such a significant occasion.
